Shrines ("Jissha") are very commonplace all across Japan. However, there are 10 special shrines that are strategically sprinkled across the Tokyo Metropolitan area. These shrines belong to the original 12 shrines that were selected by Emperor Meiji after the restoration to symbolize continued growth and prosperity in the capital city.
Today, you can start your pilgrimage and visit all 10 shrines around Tokyo central. We found that this pilgrimmage was a great way to explore unknown parts of Tokyo while you connect with your spiritual self. Most of these shrines are more quiet than the bigger and more popular shrines. When you get there, look for the pilgrimage plaque and read about its history.
In no particular order, these 10 shrines are:
1. Nezu Shrine
2. Kanda Shrine
3. Kameido Shrine
4. Ouji Shrine
5. Hie Shrine
6. Tomioka Hachiman Shrine
7. Shiba-daijingū Shrine
8. Hakusan Shrine
9. Shinagawa Shrine
10. Akasaka Hikawa Shrine
