Have you ever wanted to be abducted by aliens, but, like, in a safe and air-conditioned environment? Then pack your bags and beam yourself to Iinomachi, Fukushima’s very own UFO capital. Nestled in a sleepy mountain town that looks totally normal by day, this place transforms into X-Files: Rural Edition the moment you spot the enormous flying saucer on the hill. That’s the UFO Fureaikan Museum, and it is weird in the best possible way.
Locals have been spotting strange lights, fast-moving orbs, and suspicious crafts zipping through the skies here since the 1970s. Some say it’s because of the nearby mountains and magnetic fields. Others swear it’s because the area is a secret alien landing site that the government definitely doesn’t want you to know about. There are whispers of time warps. There are rumors of cows going missing. There are even people who claim to have communicated with beings from another star system. Over coffee.
Inside the museum, it only gets better. The building itself is shaped like a silver UFO and houses everything from alien plushies to grainy black-and-white footage of blinking lights. There’s a full-blown control room replica, panels explaining past sightings, and, yes, a UFO Sighting Declaration Form you can fill out in case you see something during your visit. There’s even a sign that politely reminds you to report any abductions. You know, just in case.
One of the best parts? The staff take it seriously, but not too seriously. You’ll leave the museum wondering if that shimmer in the corner of your photo was just lens flare or… something more. The gift shop is also stocked with bizarre alien snacks and t-shirts that proudly declare you’ve made contact. With the vending machine.
Why should you visit? Because nowhere else in Japan invites you to question reality, laugh at the absurd, and maybe, just maybe, believe. Whether you’re a UFO fanatic or just someone who enjoys museums that look like props from a 1990s sci-fi movie, the UFO Fureaikan is an unforgettable stop.
